LS, Assembly elections in J&K
12/12/2018 10:59:05 PM
Early Times Report
JAMMU, Dec 12: The Election Commission of India (ECI) has asked J&K Government to get ready for the Assembly and Lok Sabha polls. It has also sought list of officers who will be deployed for the various duties for the two elections. Both the elections could be held simultaneously. This is what reports emanating from the ECI suggest.
The ECI's election monitoring authority has also sought list of Returning Officers (ROs) and Assistant Returning Officers (AROs). Besides, in separate letters, which have been reportedly written to the District Election Officers (DEOs), the Joint Chief Electoral Officer has said that "the ECI has directed it to update the earlier appointment of ROs and AROs for general elections to Legislative Assembly and Lok Sabha and has also sought fresh 'proposal' of the ROs and AROs".
In the mean time, the Joint Chief Electoral Officer, Raman Kesar, has reportedly said that "the state will be ready for polls any time after 20 January next year". "The revision of the electoral rolls is being carried out currently, which will be completed by January 20. We could hold the elections after that," he was quoted as saying. "The final decision to conduct the elections will be taken by the ECI. We have sought the list of officers who will be deployed on duty on the directions of the ECI," he was also quoted as saying. The Lok Sabha polls are likely to be held in March-April 2019 period.
It needs to be noted that the Assembly elections have to be held by 21 May, 2019, in accordance with the Supreme Court decision to conduct polls within a period of six months from the time the Assembly was dissolved. The state Assembly remained under suspended animation since June 19, 2018 after the BJP withdrew support to PDP on the plea that the PDP-BJP government had failed to meet the needs of Jammu and Ladakh and the security situation in the state had worsened under the Mehbooba Mufti's rule. The Assembly was dissolved on November 21.
The NC, the PDP and the Congress are all for early assembly polls. As for the BJP, it's a divided house. Some in the party want assembly polls to be held along with the Lok Sabha polls hoping it will help the BJP win maximum number of seats. However, some want the assembly polls to be held after the general elections. Their view is that "the state Governor SP Malik is doing well and his actions will help the BJP win many seats in Jammu and Ladakh".
