No salary for sweepers: Cleanliness works affected
12/12/2018 11:33:03 PM
Early Times Report

JAMMU, Dec 12: With no salary being paid to the sweepers from fifteen months, it takes a week long time to clean up the garbage inside the government quarters, near old police head quarter, Panjitharthi, Jammu.
With the movement of annually Darbar move to Jammu, the government quarters which accommodates more than 160 rooms, were renovated with paints and all the area were cleaned up. But with the passage of time the garbage piled up around the government quarters making life miserable for employees and their families.
We avoid moving out of rooms as garbage piled outside quarters has created lot of mess. Monkeys come up and play with the dust which makes roaming around difficult as we have to move outside with a wooden stick in our hand, said an employee.
What are we supposed to do said, a weeper whished not to be named. "They have not paid our salary which is below than ten thousand from last than one year; if we do not come to work then the residents start asking us questions of why garbage has been piled, why have you people not cleaned up the mess". "How are we supposed to work without salary. We too have a family; we need to feed them like any other family. We have to buy bread and butter, but they do not understand, "She added.
Another sweeper said that other thing besides the payment issues is that of work power. They are just three women working here. Few years back there were many sweepers working here. It becomes difficult to clean the area without being paid and with less number of people working.
She added, "We have many a times complained to the concern departments at Gandhi Nagar but no heed has been paid to our complains. Believe us we could not celebrated our religious festivals because of lack of money".
An official said that there is a dustbin right outside the gate, but people throw dust outside the balcony. If in any case they show some antiquates of throwing garbage inside the dustbin not much garbage will piled up and less working load will be on the sweepers.
When contacted Contractor Tariq Khan, he said that what can we do. There is no liability. There is no adequate amount of funds available from last many years. It is just not in these departments it is in other departments as well.
He added, "As soon as the funds are received from the government we will pay salaries to them till than nothing much can be done".
