Early Times Report

Jammu, Jan 3: As the Government here is busy holding employment generation programmes it would be interesting to observe whether it could curtail unemployment in Jammu which has been witnessing an unprecedented spike during the last few years.
As per the government reports, a two-day workshop on "Counseling Skills & Techniques" organized under Himayat Programme in collaboration with National Institute of Rural Development & Panchayati Raj (NIRD & PR) concluded on Thursday at Panchayat Bhawan, Rail Head, Jammu.
However, on the ground what could prove herculean for the state government is to address the crises of unemployment which is witnessing a serious upsurge in Jammu division of the state.
The government figures reveal that there are 390 illiterates, 5357 middle-pass, 21530 matriculates, 26213 12th pass outs and 17351 graduates. Besides, 6586 postgraduates, 3286 diploma holders, 2877 professional and technical degree holders are registered with the state.
And as one goes through the district wise details, Jammu, as compared to Srinagar, has more than a double number of jobless youth. As in Srinagar, the number of unemployed youth is 5985, Jammu district shockingly has 11072 unemployed youth. Such a figure has unmasked the claims of the helmsmen about Jammu getting its due share in employment and development related projects.
The erstwhile PDP-BJP government had underlined various schemes for youth. However, it always remained reluctant to share the details about the number of youth from Jammu who were benefited by such schemes.
The government recently stated that 3290 selections have been made by the J&K PSC for different categories of officers, while 19583 were recruited by J&K SSB to fill vacancies of different categories during the past three years.
"Under the initiatives, the government has been implementing the schemes like; Seed Capital Fund; Youth Start-Up Loan; National Minority Development Finance Corporation; Women Entrepreneurship Programme; Self Help Group of Engineers," said an official and added that as many as 4736 units have been sponsored by covering 4762 beneficiaries under these schemes thereby generating employment for 15598 educated unemployed youth.
