ULB's Check Post at Qazigund fails to stop polythene imports
1/22/2019 10:45:06 PM
Early Times Report
Anantnag, Jan 22: A check-post established last year by the department of Urban Local Bodies Kashmir at Qaizgund in South Kashmir has failed to stop import of polythene into Kashmir valley.
The department last year had established a check post on Srinagar Jammu National Highway at Qaizgund to ensure minimum influx entry of polythene in Kashmir valley but the department's move hasn't brought any desired result.
Highly placed sources told Early Times that Municipal Committee Qazigund has made the check post almost dysfunctional and now employees supposed to keep an eye over importation of polythene are not also attending duties.
They said that other agencies responsible for checking and stopping importation of polythene bags are also not doing anything commendable.
"Trucks and vehicles carrying Polythene bags are being allowed to move instead of stopping them," sources revealed.
Last year, Director Urban Local Bodies Kashmir had issued order and directed MC Qazigund to depute four employees at Check Post Pahalgam.
"The Jammu and Kashmir Government has already banned the polythene carry bags within the territorial limits of state, however the matter was re-examined and it was felt necessary to setup a polythene check Post at Lower Munda Qazigund near Toll Post to ensure no vehicles carrying polythene enter into the Kashmir division," reads the order. Director Urban Local Bodies Kashmir has directed Executive Officer Municipal Committee Qazigund to depute at least four employees to the polythene check Post.
Important to mention here, state government in exercise of the powers confirmed by sub-section (3) of section (7) of the Jammu and Kashmir Non-biodegradable material (Management, Handling & Disposal) Act 2007 vide SRO 182 Dated 18-06-2008 has imposed ban on the polythene carry bags.
