| Fast-unto-death strike by NHM enters day 4 | | | Early Times Report
Jammu, Feb 12: On the fourth day of their hunger strike, the health condition of NHM Employees Jammu provincial president Rohit Seth and his associate Dr Raman Sharma deteriorated after they were
hospitalized at Government Medical College Jammu. However, both of them returned to continue the fast and refused to break their hunger strike.
Rest of their accomplices were also monitored by fellow doctors and declared them acutely dehydrated and would need monitoring throughout the night.
On the other hand several employees including females, were injured after police lathicharged the protesting employees at Lal Chowk Srinagar while police also made use of teargas shelling and pepper gas.
The protests at Press Club Jammu continued for the 30th day today with families of some of those on fast joining their kin and made emotional speeches. They castigated the administration for ignoring the plight of the striking employees who are seeking redressal of their just grievances.
Jammu provincial president of All J&K NHM Employees Association Rohit Seth and Dr Raman Sharma were yesterday joined by Kashmir provincial president Muneer Andrabi, Dr Ramneek Singh and Mohammad Azam in their fast unto death. The leaders vowed to continue their fast till their demands were met. "The government is not serious. We will not budge before their coercive measures unless and until they show seriousness towards redressal of our grievances.", said Rohit Seth. "We are not going to take verbal assurances. In the past we had been given written assurances but those are yet to see light of the day. How can we trust their verbal commitments", said Muneer Andrabi, Kashmir provincial president.
At Srinagar, a protest rally of the employees was intercepted by police near Kothi Bagh police station who used force to disperse them. Police used cane charging, pepper gas and tear smoke shells to disperse the employees. Scores of employees, including women, were injured who were later hospitalized. Many employees were also arrested by police but later released in the evening.
The employees are demanding regularisation of services on the pattern of SRO 255 and implementation of 'equal work equal pay' orders of theh Supreme Court along with social security benefits pending regularisation. "Our contractual counterparts in the state are being paid equal pay as per SRO 384. We are seeking nothing more", said Dr Arun Deyol, vice president Jammu province.
"We have shown flexibility and given choices to the government. It is for the government to decide whether they want us to live with dignity", said Rohit Seth, in a frail voice. Provincial president Kashmir, Muneer Andrabi said they had to take the extreme step in view of cold shouldering of their demands by the government. "We don't have a lot of time available. The model code of conduct is on its way. After that it would be difficult for the government to take any decision in favour of our legal and genuine demands". |
