Article 35A debate: Security has been beefed up in Jammu and Kashmir amid the debate on Article 35A of the Constitution. One of the petitioners is likely to plead the Supreme Court to take up the matter for hearing on an urgent basis. The government so far has maintained a stand that the hearings on Article 35A should be deferred because the state is under President Rule. A bunch of petitions have been filed in the Supreme Court challenging the validity of Article 35-A of the Constitution that gives special status to Jammu and Kashmir. A number of separatists leaders in Kashmir have been arrested/detained as a precautionary measure in the past few days. The situation in the state remains tense with leaders being divided on their stand on Article 35-A. The BJP, which won a majority of seats in Jammu region in the last assembly elections, is in favour of scrapping Article 35-A. Meanwhile, the two Kashmir-centric parties-J&K National Conference and Peoples' Democratic Party-have opposed the move.
