Govt fails to install STP in Chadoora town
Fecal matter, liquid waste enter Doodh Ganga
3/12/2019 10:31:29 PM
Early Times Report
Budgam, Mar 12: Assurances from the Government notwithstanding, the failure of the authorities to install Sewerage Treatment Plant (STP) in Chadoora town is endangering lives of the people as all the fecal matter, sewerage and liquid waste coming out of commercial and residential areas continues to find its way into the Doodh Ganga nallah from which the Public Health Engineering Department (PHE) lifts water for a major portion of Srinagar city.
Details available with Early Times reveal that Advisor to Governor Khurshid Ahmad Ganai in October last year promised to set up an STP and scientific Solid Waste Management (SWM) plant in Chadoora town. Almost 6 months have passed but nothing has been done till date.
As reported already Chadoora town is facing a serious problem vis a vis management of solid and liquid waste. The Municipal Committee Chadoora has not even been able to identity land for creating a scientific landfill site and locals of Chadoora allege that large amount of municipal solid waste also finds its way into Doodh Ganga nallah.
Sources have revealed that more than 300 lavatories and household sewerage from hundreds of houses and business units enters into the Doodh Ganga from Surasyar area to water filtration plant Kralpora. Most of the solid and liquid waste enters into the water of Doodh Ganga at Chadoora town where hundreds of shops, clinics and other commercial units have been set up on the banks of Doodh Ganga. The illegal construction on main road especially on banks of Doodh Ganga is the main cause of frequent traffic jam in the town as the whole township has been chocked and congested from all the sides. Locals allege that banks of Doodh Ganga nallah have been encroached at various places and authorities at the helm of affairs are mute spectators. Government could not even find a state land in Chadoora town to set up new Degree College with the result college is to be established at Wathoora village located outside the Chadoora town.
Pertinent to mention that Department of Public Health Engineering (PHE) is supplying same Doodh Ganga water to almost 10 lakh population in Srinagar's uptown areas like Wanbal, Pir Bagh , Rawalpora , Hyderpora , Chanapora , Nowgam , Kralpora , Bagh e Mehtab , Gopalpora and other areas. The situation is alarming as chlorination or sedimentation process at Doodh Ganga filtration plant Kralpora is not making water safe for drinking purpose.
With an aim of supplying "so called" safe drinking water to Srinagar uptown, J&K Economic Reconst-ruction Agency (ERA) already laid a Raw water pipeline from higher reaches of Doodh Ganga at village Nowhaar in Chadoora to Kralpora water treatment plant. The water from Doodh Ganga is lifted at Nowhaar as well which is 18 kms from Kralpora Doodh Ganga filtration plant . Sources say that Nowhaar is not the last village located on the banks of Doodh Ganga. There are more than half a dozen habitations like Bonyaar, Pethyaar, Surasyaar, Check Surasyaar, Brenwar etc where from water comes down to newly established water supply scheme. Population in these habitations will increase in the coming years. Right now lot of fecal matter , solid and liquid waste continues to enter Doodh Ganga around these habitations as well especially in rainy season which is making the new water supply scheme unhygienic as well.
