Harsh Dev Joins club of those seeking early Assembly poll
4/29/2019 11:40:53 PM
Chairman of National Panthers Party, Harsh Dev Singh, has joined those politicians who keep on demanding early Assembly poll in Jammu and Kashmir. Hitherto, the Kashmir centric politicians, including Dr Farooq, Abdullah, Omar Abdullah, G.A. Mir of the Congress and Mehbooba Mufti of the PDP have been trying to berate the state Government officials for delaying the schedule for holding the Assembly elections. The state was placed under the Governor's rule on June 18, 2018 and the longest central rule was imposed on the state in 1990 which was followed by the Assembly elections in 1996. Well those were the days when militancy had taken birth in the state. But though less than six months had passed and Harsh Dev Singh has fears that the state be placed under the President's rule and under the central rule there is no limit to holding of the Assembly elections.
Though the centre has promised that where the Assembly elections are due the Lok Sabha elections could be held along with the Assembly poll. But once the Governor's rule was placed on Jammu and Kashmir it was bound to hold the Assembly elections within six months. And for politicians demanding early Assembly elections in Jammu and Kashmir Governor S.P. Malik has been itched by the force of powers vested in the Governor and he would not like to abdicate his powers. But the story of Lok Sabha elections have been a tale of poor voting percentage. Though elections have been held in three constituencies of Jammu, Srinagar, and Anantnag and in Jammu over 73 per cent polling was witnessed but as far as the Kashmir scene is concerned the voting percentage in Srinagar was 14 per cent and that of Anantnag has been 12.86 per cent. Why this poor polling because the Congress and the National Conference also boycotted the poll under the instructions of the separatists.
This way the Election Commission of India and the state Government officials do not want to give leverage to the separatists for registering their strength. In Jammu the presence of separatists has been minimal an d that is the reason that Jammu-Poonch constituency witnessed over 73 per cent polling. Which means that hardly a section of people in the Jammu region listened to the dictates of the separatists. If Baramulla also went with the separatists and boycotted the polling but in Kathua-Udhampur constituency the polling was over 73 per cent it means that in the region of Jammu separatists do not have any strength. This has strengthened the argument of those who want trifurcation of Jammu and Kashmir. And if in Baramulla the voting percentage is low Pakistan would seek demand of the Kashmir valley.
