Early Times Report
Jammu, Apr 29: Residents of posh Gandhi Nagar area of Jammu are facing a new terror: stray dogs.
An army of canines can be seen marching round-the-clock through the streets of Gole Market, Green Belt, New Basti and Shastri Nagar localities of Gandhi Nagar.
Local residents informed Early Times that the canines even enter into their homes if the doors aren't closed.
"These stray dogs have virtually unleashed a reign of terror in the localities. At the receiving end are mostly elderly persons and children. The aged persons especially those who visit Gole Market and Green Belt Park for morning and evening walk are a terrified lot," said the residents.
They said that three years ago, the Jammu Municipal Corporation (JMC) had conducted a survey to find the number of stray dogs in Jammu. The survey found that nearly 60,000 strays dogs are roaming freely on the streets of Jammu city and only few thousands (3,000 to be precise) were sterilised.
"If the authorities conduct a fresh survey, surely the population of stray dogs would be found to have reached an alarming proportion", sources in the JMC told Early Times.
Sources further said that last year, the authorities of JMC had announced that an independent survey would be conducted through a private agency and thereafter sterilisation process would be initiated. Nothing has been done, though. Meanwhile, the canines have been attacking school-going children and chasing the two wheelers, resulting into accidents.
"An anger is brewing among the local residents as they had time and again urged the Mayor of JMC to organise a special drive to check the meance of stray dogs in the city especially in Gandhi Nagar area, but his silence over the issue raises questions", said Som Nath of Gole Market.
He said that life has become a hell for the people and they fail to understand where from these dogs have come in such a huge number. "School-going children are bitten by dogs every day but the government seems to be sleeping," Nath said.
He said the elderly people carry a stick with them during their morning and evening walks because of fear of dogs. Will the JMC wake up to control the growing menace of stray dogs?
