Udhampur District Library sans manpower
5/6/2019 10:35:04 PM
Early Times Report
Udhampur, May 6: The lack of attention of the Director Libraries and Archives as well as by the District Library Council, Mahadeep Singh Jamwal social activist and Rtd. SSP said that the Udhampur District Library established way back in 1963, used to cater to the requirements of the student community, civil society and retired fraternity.
A number of members were registered with the library on security deposit bases. At present, the Library is shifted to a newly constructed building costing Rs 1.30 crore somewhere in 2014. The library equipped with approximately 31 thousand books and every year approximately two thousand books purchased at the Directorate level are added to the library. It is surprising that though the library has sanctioned strength of senior librarian one post, junior librarian one post, librarian assistant one post, library bearer one post and orderly one post, the library is provided only with one senior librarian and all other posts are lying vacant. This speaks of the fact that Directorate is much interested in purchasing books out of tax payer's money and least concerned about their upkeep, classification and cataloguing them and thus whole purpose of establishing library in district and at tehsil headquarters is a futile one. Since 2016, the chairman District Library Council has miserably failed to convene meeting of the council is also an indicator of lacking of attention on both Directorate as well as at the District level. The air-conditioned installed in the reading hall are non-functional and once decided about 24X7 WiFi facility is in shackles thus hardships are being faced by just few visitors to the library and most of them are student community. Jamwal urged the Director library to ensure membership to each and everyone desirous of obtaining it on security bases, the facility at present denied to civil society, Student community and retired fraternity.
