Jammu, Ladakh not a priority: Cong unlikely to appoint 3 working presidents

Early Times Report
JAMMU, June 5: Top Congress leaders from the state on Sunday met at Srinagar under the leadership of Leader of Opposition in Rajya Sabha Ghulam Nabi Azad to find what led to the defeat of all the 5 candidates in the just-concluded Lok Sabha elections. The Congress had fielded 5 candidates, 2 each from Jammu province and Kashmir and one from Ladakh. The BJP defeated the Congress candidates in Jammu and Ladakh and the NC defeated its candidates in Kashmir. The Congress had not fielded its candidate against NC president Farooq Abdullah, who contested from the Srinagar Lok Sabha constituency.
Credible sources in the Congress said: "Ghulam Nabi Azad faced tough questions from the leaders but brushed them aside with the promise of dedicating more time to the State. The leaders advised Ghulam Nabi Azad to have a new JKPCC body in place with a new local leader as the president who would be available in the State for the upcoming assembly polls"
According to insiders, "during the discussion, Congress leaders from Jammu and Ladakh suggested that the time has come to have three working presidents in the state, one each for Jammu, Kashmir and Ladakh, as the aspirations of the people of the three regions are not the same". However, the suggestion was opposed tooth and nail.
"The suggestion of having different presidents for three provinces in the State was met with stiff resistance as it would eventually lead to more divisions between the people of the State along with the party cadre being more disillusioned," said sources, adding that the "Congress leaders from Kashmir equated the three provincial president ideas to the BJP's idea of trifurcating the State".
It's clear that the Congress has no place for Jammu and Ladakh in its scheme of things, despite the fact that the Congress ruled the state for many years with the support of the people of these two regions. By opposing the suggestion of three working presidents in the state consisting of three distinct regions, the Congress has only further harmed its long-term interests.
