Early Times Report

Kishtwar, July 1: In another tragic accident on Kishtwar-Keshwan road, 37 passengers including 14 females died while 17 others including seven females sustained injuries when an overcrowded mini- bus bearing registration No. JK17-6787 met with an accident near Sirgwari some 25 KMs from Kishtwar.
Reports said, the ill fated vehicle was on its way to Kishtwar when the driver lost control over it as a result of which the vehicle fell into 500 feet deep gorge causing on the spot death of around 15 persons.
As soon as the news of the accident reached the town, people from adjoining areas immediately rush to the spot and started rescuing the injured.
They were later joined by the administration, police, army and volunteers of Ababeel.
The initial report suggested that more than 45 passengers including children were on board the vehicle when it met with the accident.
The Prime Minister Narindra Modi, J&K Governor Satya Pal Malik, Leader of Opposition in Rajya Sabha Ghulam Nabi Azad, Former CM Omar Abdullah, MLC Sajjad Ahmed Kichloo, Former Minister Ghulam Mohammad Saroori, Ex MLA Sunil Kumar Sharma, PDP District President Sheikh Nasir Hussain and several others expressed grief over the loss of lives.
The locals said that 3-4 persons escaped unhurt and thus it suggested that around 55 passengers were on board the ill fated vehicle against the sanctioned capacity of 27 + 1(28 passengers including driver and conductor)
Speaking to Early Times, Deputy Commissioner Kishtwar Angrez Singh Rana confirmed the death of 35 passengers adding that 14 bodies were at District Hospital Kishtwar including those injured who died while receiving treatment in the hospital while 21 bodies were kept at the accident spot. He said that 17 other injured are being treated in Kishtwar and Jammu hospital. He said the death toll could mount as many injured persons had critical injuries.
He said that 15 critically injured were airlifted to Jammu Medical College for treatment.
He said that he also visited the spot and found that the road at accident spot is in good shape.
It is pertinent to mention that last year on this very road 25 passengers died when a mini bus met with an accident nearly 5 KM ahead from the present accidental spot.
Meanwhile the traders also called for immediate shutdown call, beside the call was also given by Imam Jamia Masjid Kishtwar Farooq Ahmed Kichloo following which all the shops and business establishment remain closed as a mark of protest against the unabated killings of innocent people in accidents across the length and breadth of Chenab valley.
The schools also remain closed following the accident as a result of which the Kishtwar District wore deserted look as all roads lead to Hospital or accidental site.
The people demanded immediate registration of FIR against the PMGSY for their failure in maintaining and to complete the construction of Kishtwar-Keshwan road even after more than 10 years of its sanctioned during UPA 1 government.
The people said that last year they also held protest against the PMGSY after last year fatal accident, but nothing was done till date to improve the poor condition of the road.
