VDCs and SPOs are to be revamped to take on militants
7/25/2019 9:39:28 PM
The Government seems to lose faith in the aged Village Defence Committees and that is the reason that about 500 elderly Village Defence Committee (VDC) members and Special Police Officers (SPO) in Kishtwar district of will be replaced soon, a senior police stated. The step is part of a strategy to counter militant activities in the hilly district which was rattled by the killing of BJP state secretary Anil Parihar andhis brother Ajeet Parihar on November 1 last year, followed by the assassination of senior RSS leader Chanderkant Sharma and his security guard inside a health centre on April 9. The decision was taken despite reservations expressed by former Chief Minister Mehbooba Mufti over arming of civilians in Chenab valley. "Keeping in view the present security scenario in Kishtwar town and the overstaying of SPOs in the district (Kishtwar), an overhauling is being done. A process to replace 352 VDC members and 117 VDC SPOs who are above the age of 60 years has been set into motion," ," the officer said. The SPOs, who have overstayed at a particular place have also been replaced. Besides this, 9 VDC SPOs have been disengaged from the VDC rolls for non compliance of orders, the officer said. The VDC's are enrolled by young people and that is the reason for losing faith in the VDCs enrolled by aged people who cannot meet any challenge from the militants.Similarly the SPOS too is being revamped so that youg blood is enrolled so that the SPOs can meet the challenge from the militants. However, both the VDCs and the SPOs were holding guns right from the days of the National Conference Government and how is it Mehbooba Mufti holds the Governor and his advisers responsible for arming the VDCs and the SPOs.What is called security grid being upgraded so that militants do not derail peace in the upper regions of the Jammu region..The Governor's administration may achieve success in case peace is restoired to the state.
