Early Times Report

JAMMU, July 30: Contrary to tall claims of the state government to provide basic civic amenities in different parts of the city, the street lights in Sanjay Nagar locality are defunct for more than a year now and still waiting for repair or replacement.
The residents of the area have no respite in sight despite the fact that the matter was taken up with the concerned authorities repeatedly by them.
The lighting system within few months of its installation developed some snag and since then it hasn't been repaired, a resident said.
Several residents who spoke to Early Times said that the lighting system went out of order last year.
"In absence of streetlights it becomes very difficult to move out during late evening and night hours, in case of any emergency," an inhabitant of the area said.
"Despite many representations to authorities concerned, to either repair or replace the defunct lights, nothing has been done so far," he added. When contacted local Councillor Dwarka Choudhary said that he is well aware of the problem of defunct street lights adding that he is on the job to rectify it.
"I know that some street lights are non-functional in Sanjay Nagar since their bulbs got fused. I am trying to ensure replacement of fused bulbs but it will take some time as the order to purchase 5000 new bulbs has recently been placed by the Jammu Municipal Corporation. As soon as the new bulbs are procured, I assure that the fused bulbs will be replaced and streetlights will be made functional," said Choudhary.
