Early Times Report

SRINAGAR, Aug 2: Taking cognizance of a rejoinder filed by the complainant in connection with supply of un-hygienic drinking water from Doodh Ganga water filtration plant, the State Human Rights Commission (SHRC) today issued notices to Directorate of Urban Local Bodies Kashmir (DULB-K) and Department of Rural Sanitation (DRS) thus making them parties in the complaint.
The complaint titled J&K RTI Movement v/s State of J&K was listed for hearing on Friday before Chairperson Justice B A Nazki. Taking cognizance of the rejoinder filed by complainant organization, Chairperson SHRC sought a report from Directorate of Rural Sanitation, Directorate of Urban Local Bodies Kashmir and Municipal Committee Chadoora. Commission had earlier asked its investigating agency headed by Dy SP Nisar Ahmad to get the water samples from Doodh Ganga tested/examined through some expert agency.
The said report has been obtained as well. The investigation team in its report has authenticated the claim of the complainant organization wherein it was alleged that more than 200 lavatories and sewerage enters into Doodh Ganga in Chadoora tehsil of Budgam.
The RTI Movement in its rejoinder has said that there are large number of apple orchards located on the banks of Doodh Ganga from Chadoora to Branwar (18 kms stretch). "Doodh Ganga water gets contaminated during spraying of pesticides in the apple orchards. This makes water unfit for public consumption. I request this should be got examined," reads the rejoinder. The complainant organization through its Chairman Dr Raja Muzaffar Bhat has informed SHRC through its rejoinder that authorities have failed to perform its duties as there are open drains that enter into Doodh Ganga around Chadoora town.
Pertinently Commissioner Secretary PHE, DC Budgam and Principal Medical College were the primary respondents in the case that was filed last year in November by JK RTI Movement
