8/5/2019 6:25:35 PM
New Delhi , Aug 5
Describing the revoking of Article 370 as a bold step, veteran BJP leader LK Advani said he is happy with the decision.

On Monday, Union Home Minister Amit Shah moved a resolution in the Rajya Sabha that Article 370, which allowed Jammu and Kashmir to have its own Constitution, will no longer be applicable.

Reacting to the move, LK Advani said: "I am happy with the government's decision to revoke Article 370 and I believe that it is a bold step towards strengthening national integration."

Advani said the "scrapping of Article 370 has been a part of BJP's core ideology since the days of Jan Sangh".

"I congratulate the Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi and the Home Minister Shri Amit Shah for this historic initiative and pray for peace, prosperity and progress in Jammu, Kashmir and Ladakh," Advani said.

Earlier, Amit Shah informed the Rajya Sabha of the government’s proposal to reorganise Jammu and Kashmir carving out two separate Union Territories has been done in view of constant threats of cross-border terrorism.

"The president on the recommendation of Parliament is pleased to declare as from 5th of August 2019, all clauses of the said Article 370 shall cease to be operative... ," stated the resolution moved by Amit Shah.

Amit Shah also moved a bill proposing bifurcation of the state of Jammu and Kashmir into two Union Territories -- Jammu and Kashmir, and Ladakh.
