16,424 Indian citizens served notice on SC on Rohingya issue
Unprecedented development

Early Times Report
Jammu, Aug 10: It's unprecedented. Not one or 100 or 1,000 but as many as 16,424 Indian citizens reportedly served a legal notice on the Supreme Court of India. The reason: The apex court's decision to hear a petition to "examine if refugee status can be given to Rohingya Muslims in India". These 16,424 people include Kashmiri Hindus, retired army officers and civil servants. The legal notice to the apex court has been described as "unprecedented development" in the legal history of India.
The notice sent by an advocate, Vibhor Anand, to the Supreme Court on August 4, through its secretary general, said that "he had been authorized by the 16,424 citizens living in various parts of the country to serve the legal notice so that the top court opens its eyes and ears to the voices of the majority population of India".
The petitioners in their legal notice have argued that "Rohingya Muslims are a security threat to the country", that "the Supreme Court decision had created a lot of anger among the people of the country" and that "the court was biased in its approach in taking up the case when more important cases were pending".
"These people have authorized me to serve the notice on Supreme Court of India," Anand said. "If the top court doesn't pay heed to the notice, he would be constrained to file 16,424 individual public interest litigations (PILs) and file a "petition in the Supreme Court against the Supreme Court," he also reportedly said.
It needs to be underlined that last year, two Jammu-based Rohingyas had moved the Supreme Court against the Centre's proposed plan to deport all the Rohingyas to Myanmar from where they came. Most of the Rohingyas have been settled in Jammu and Samba districts and their number runs in 1,000s.
It is estimated that some 40,000 Rohingya live across the country, including the capital West Bengal, New Delhi, Haryana, Telangana and Tamil Nadu.
As for the Central Government, it has taken the stand that the "country cannot become the refugee capital of the world" and has defended the "Border Security Force's efforts, using chilli spray and stun grenades, to push back Rohingya Muslims seeking to cross the border".
