Srinagar, Nov 6: The fresh snowfall and rain has brought down the temperature in entire plains of Kashmir giving a sigh of relief to the residents from the month long dryness.
The weather in valley late Tuesday night changed the mood and the rain started in most parts of the state which continued to remain intermittent throughout the night.
In Srinagar and adjoining areas, there were strong winds and rain overnight. The weather conditions worsened in the wee hours of Wednesday and rain started in most of the upper reaches of the valley including Gulmarg.
Meanwhile, Gulmarg recorded 7 inches snow, one and a half feet in Afarwat, one and a half feet in Sonamarg, and two feet in Sadhanatap. While as, two feet in Mahagun top.
The Met department has warned of avalanches in high-rise areas during the next four hours. This is the fourth in the present-day plains in the higher reaches of the plaintiffs. JAMMU, Nov 6: The Mughal Road, connecting the twin districts of Poonch and Rajouri in Jammu region with South Kashmir's Shopian district, was closed for vehicular traffic on Wednesday after snowfall in the high altitude areas, officials said.
The weather department on Tuesday predicted widespread moderate to heavy snowfall and rains in the hills and plains of Jammu and Kashmir and Ladakh union territories for three days starting from Wednesday.
There was snowfall in high altitude areas including Pir Ki Gali on Tuesday due to which the road was closed for vehicular traffic as a precautionary measure, the officials said.
They said commuters had been directed to avoid travel along the road to avoid any untoward incident.
Meanwhile, the officials said traffic on the Jammu-Srinagar national highway was going on smoothly despite rains.
Light motor vehicles are moving from both sides on nearly 300-km highway, the only all-weather road linking Kashmir with the rest of the country, while heavy vehicles were allowed to move during evening timing from Jammu to Srinagar.
The movement of heavy vehicles was restricted to one-way owing to overall condition of the road, especially between Jawahar Tunnel and Ramban, coupled with narrow width of the highway at some places owing to the ongoing widening and upgrading work.
The weather system is likely to cause temporary disruptions on surface transport especially over passes like Zojila, Srinagar-Jammu, Leh-Manali Highway, Mughal Road due to landslides, low temperatures and heavy snowfall.
"There is an active western disturbance. Its interaction with Cyclone MAHA (currently lying over East central Arabian sea) is most likely to cause widespread moderate to heavy snowfall and rain in the plains of Jammu, Kashmir and Ladakh from November 6 to 8," Director, State Meteorological department, Sonam Lotus, said.

According to the Met department, the day's maximum temperature in Srinagar today was 8.2 degree Celsius below normal, while the minimum temperature was recorded at 3.2 degree Celsius. According to the department, the weather will continue till 8th November due to the western disturbance and in the meantime most of the places in the plains are likely to experience light showers and rains.
In the higher reaches of the plaintiffs, including Bandipora, Baramulla, Kupwara, Ganderbal, Budgam, Anantnag and Shopian districts, the administration has advised people to exercise caution in their walk.
Besides, the administration has kept snow removal machines ready to clear snow from the roads in the said areas and has also made elaborate arrangements to ensure the release of electricity and water supply in these areas without any hindrance.
The Met Department has predicted severe weather conditions in the plains till 8th November and snowfall and avalanches in the higher reaches of the plains.
