Early Times Report

Pulwama, Nov 6: Deputy Commissioner Pulwama Dr Raghav Langer has suspended two employees of PHE Deptt, who were involved in illegal extraction of soil in the area. Based on the report of Tehsildar Pampore, both suspended employees have been attached to the office of ADC Awantipora who has been designated as the enquiry officer.
It is pertinent to mention that both these employees posted in Sub Divisional PHE office, Pampore were habitual offenders and already arrest warrants under Sec 151/107 CrPC had been issued against them.
Moreover, the Deputy Commissioner Pulwama has formulated Tehsil & District level committees to report & act stringently against land mafia involved in illegal conversion and encroachment of saffron lands.
Around 80% saffron growing land in J&K is in Pampore Tehsil and over the years hundreds of Hectares of land has been illegally converted for commercial, residential & other purposes.
J&K Saffron Act, 2007 was brought in by the then Govt to prohibit any conversion of saffron land and there is provision of penalty/imprisonment for its violation. However the menace still continued unabated due to lack of resolve on part of the concerned departments. Many commercial entities & private housing colonies have illegally got constructed on saffron lands.
Under the 400 crore National Saffron Mission (2010-2019) that targeted 3200 hac area in Pampore alone, only 1919 hac area could be brought under rejuvenation and intervention due to rapid shrinkage of these world famous saffron fields.
Deputy Commissioner Pulwama has now made it mandatory for the concerned departments to do fortnightly, survey number wise, reporting regarding status of these lands, encroachment made if any and action taken thereof.
Concerned Nodal officer Saffron Mission(District Agriculture Officer-Extension); Tehsildar Pampore and XEN Mech Eng Div, Srinagar (agency executing irrigation systems in saffron lands under the Mission) have been made jointly responsible.
