Early Times Report
SRINAGAR, Nov 24: As Jammu and Kashmir witnesses over five cases of domestic violence on an average daily, the absence of commission has hit these cases in the new union territory.
Sources said State Women Commission would receive around 1700 domestic violence cases every year. This indicates JK witnesses over five cases of domestic cases on an average daily. The actual number of such cases could be much higher.
"As State Women Commission no more exists in Jammu and Kashmir, no one is resolving domestic violence cases in the new union territory. There has been steep rise in domestic violence cases for last few years from 1200 to 1700 cases annually," sources said.
Sources said there is rise in domestic violence against women in Kashmir especially in Pulwama, Badgam and Srinagar districts.
Sharing her sorrowful tale, Shahzada (name changed) 33 resides at Badgam, with her nine year old son and five year daughter, said, "My husband often beats me during the late night hours and is always searching for excuses. He even threatens me that he would go for re-marriage."
Observers believe that in most of the cases of domestic violence, the reasons are dowry, interference from in-laws, misunderstandings, giving birth to female babies.
They also believe that political turmoil also appeared to have contributed to this menace in the Valley.
Studies reveal that domestic violence is a serious human rights threat to women in every society, rich and poor, developed and under-developed, young and old, irrespective of caste, creed, and class and educational levels. There is also an alarming rate of females, who commit suicide because of the harassment they faces by the in-laws.
Recently numbers of suicide cases by women were also reported in Kashmir and the reasons found were domestic violence.
Experts suggest that dowry system needs to be abolished in the society so as to tackle the domestic violence.
"Dowry is one of the main reasons for domestic violence. If there is no dowry system, there will be no violence against women," said a professor Bashir Ahmad.
A psychiatrist at GMC Srinagar said most of the psychiatrist problems among women in Jammu Kashmir are because of domestic violence.
"The uncertainty among women because of domestic violence many a times even leads to suicide attempts commit by females. Women who face domestic violence feel psychological anxiety which also impact on their overall health," the doctor said.
