Early Times Report
Srinagar, Nov 24: Even as millions of rupees were meant for heating arrangements during the recently held exams for various board and university level examinations s in Kashmir province, the students complained of having shivered in cold.
The government recently held the board exams for the matriculation and class 12th. But despite heavy snowfall and sub-zero conditions, the exam centers, as per the students, had no heating arrangements in place.
Official sources said as per rough estimates around Rs one crore are kept aside for providing heating arrangements in exam centers during winters.
But the students complained that due to extreme cold in the exam centers they couldn't write the exams properly. "We had to spend most of the time to rub our hands to keep warm as a result of which our speed of writing remained affected," said a delegation of students.
Apart from absence of heating arrangements in exams centers for the exams held by the JK State Board of School Education, the students of Kashmir University had to face similar situation.
The post graduate students who appeared in the exams at the Law Department of Kashmir University's main campus at the Hazratbal also complained of extremely cold conditions.
A senior official said there was a need to probe as to "who all, over the years have been swindling the money meant for heating arrangements of exam centers."
"Over the years the corrupt regimes must have shielded such faces who grabbed the money meant for heating arrangements but now that we have a Union Territory in place, let's hope that the government orders inquiry into such shady deals," said a senior official on the condition of anonymity.
Meanwhile the aggrieved students and their parents have appealed the Lieutenant Governor to order a probe into the matter such that no such corruption is repeated in future.
