Early Times Report
JAMMU, Nov 24: Making a mockery of system, authorities have yet to start campaign to check safety of the bunkers constructed on Line of Control (LoC) and International Border (IB)
After getting reports that the ill designed safety bunkers constructed by the Public Works Department (PWD) of J&K are posing threat to border dwellers, J&K government in the month of Febrary this year had appointed committee for conducting physical and financial audit in respect of construction of bunkers under Security Related Expenditure (SRE) within one month but nothing has been done so far.
Reports said that not only contractors are compromising with quality of the bunkers, construction is also going in very slow pace in most of the border areas. Due to casual approach being adopted by the authorities, Panchayat members have themselves started investigation of the bunkers of ensure no compromise with safety measures.
Most of the bunkers in the RS Pura and Arnia sectors of Jammu district are ill-designed and filled with rainwater, making them unfit for use.
In January 2018, the Centre had sanctioned the construction of 14,460 along the Line of Control (LoC) and the International Border (IB).
7,298 bunkers were sanctioned along the LoC in Poonch and Rajouri, the construction of 7,162 underground bunkers was started along the IB in Jammu, Kathua and Samba districts.
Of the 14,460 bunkers, 13,029 are individual bunkers and 1,431 community bunkers. The capacity of the 160 sq ft individual bunker is eight persons and that of the 800 sq ft community bunker is 40 persons.
