Srinagar Mayor on way out, makes last ditch attempt to save his chair
12/21/2019 11:41:46 PM

Early Times Report
JAMMU, Dec 21: Mayor of Srinagar Municipal Corporation (SMC) Junaid Azim Mattoo, who virtually disappeared from the scene after August 5 has resurfaced again amid reports that Bharatiya Janta Party (BJP) is bracing up to dethrone him and his deputy Sheikh Imran, who is under detention for the past 4 months at MLAs Hostel in Srinagar.
According to the media reports, the BJP, which has only 4 members in the 70-member SMC, is trying to rope in the supporters of Mattoo and Imran to stage a coup against the duo.
Media reports claim that most of the Corporators, who defied the terrorists to contest the Urban Local Bodies (ULBs) elections in Srinagar are of the opinion that Junaid Mattoo and Sheikh Imran have failed to do anything for the people. The Srinagar Mayor has gone into his shell while his deputy has been in jail.
These Corporators, according to the media reports are in touch with the BJP's J&K unit and they may enter into a deal with the saffron party to topple Mattoo.
An analyst while talking to Early Times said, "BJP with just 4 members seems to be aiming high. Even if it succeeds in toppling Mattoo and installing its own man as the Mayor of SMC it won't be able to do much as the Corporators, who are likely to support the party are from the People's Conference and are demanding that they should be given the lion's share."
He said, "Soon after Mattoo was elected as the Mayor of the SMC last year, he was confronted by his deputy Sheikh Imran, who was supported by the Congress at that point of time. Both of them remained at loggerheads for long time before Sheikh Imran turned his coat and joined People's Conference. Despite Mattoo and Imran burying their hatchets the duo couldn't do much to put the SMC on track.
An observer said, "The BJP has realized that it is the right time to hit the nail on its head as both of them have almost been wiped out from the scene and their party is on the crossroads."
He said that soon after Mattoo realized that he could be toppled he convened a meeting of the SMC officials in Srinagar last week and tried to create a notion that he is very much concerned about the people. "But everyone knows that it won't be easy for him to save his chair and his big political ambitions have hit the roadblock," the observer added.
