Early Times Report
Anantnag, Dec 22: Due to pathetic condition of National Highway 44 from Ramban to Qazigund, the Traffic chaos continues as over 12000 trucks loaded with fresh apples are stranded on highway particularly in Qazigund area of South Kashmir's Anantnag district.
The stranded truckrs are up in arms against the Jammu and Kashmir Government particularly as they aren't being allowed to move towards Jammu. The apple fruit loaded trucks are lined-up from Sangam to Jawahar Tunnel in Qazigund and they aren't allowed to move towards Jammu and Delhi, drivers told Early Times.
They decried official apathy and hoax claims of state and central government regarding the smooth of movement of traffic on Srinagar-Jammu National Highway. "We are facing a number of problems on highway. We don't have enough food and money and our families are worried about our safety," they said.
"No one (in the government) is showing any concern. The condition of road is so pathetic that light motor vehicles also face problems in completing the journey from Srinagar to Jammu in a day," truck drivers said.
Truck drivers also held a protest in Qazigund area of Anantnag today and sought the intervention of LG Murmu. They raised high pitched slogans against the Jammu and Kashmir Government.
A traffic department official, who is looking after the National Highway in Qazigund area of South Kashmir confirmed to Early Times that around 8000 trucks are stranded on Highway.
"Yes around 8000 trucks are stranded on highway," he said.
The traffic department official said that trucks get stranded on highway due to single way movement of traffic on Srinagar-Jammu National Highway and also due to bad weather that prevailed in last weeks.
The Qazigund-Ramban patch of Highway, which is being constructed from last many years, is in bad condition and the highway remains off during winter due to landslides. The agency which is constructing the highway is facing sharp criticism for not marinating the required pace of construction works. The slow movement of fruit loaded trucks not only escalates fare rates but also cause damage to the fruit they ferry to Jammu and other cities of the country.
