PM punctures NRC balloon
12/23/2019 10:25:54 PM

Prime Minister Narendra Modi has tried to put the speculations to rest about the National Register for Citizens (NRC) being prepared across the country. He has said that there is no such proposal and the people should not get misled by the false propaganda being unleashed by the opposition parties.
PM Modi's statement on the NRC has come in the backdrop of the countrywide protests against the Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA) enacted recently by the Parliament. Since the day new citizenship law has been enacted opposition leaders have been linking it with the NRC. A notion is being created that Muslims across the country will have to prove their identity. The protests against the CAA are refusing to die. CAA entitles Hindus, Sikhs, Parsis, Christians and the members of other persecuted minority communities in Pakistan Bangladesh and Afghanistan to seek Indian citizenship. However, there is no provision for the Muslims in the new Act. Muslims being left out has created a fear psychosis among them that if the Government of India (GoI) decides to come up with the NRC then they will have to prove their citizenship and if they fail to do so they will be either deported or sent to detention centres.
Opposition parties during the past 7 days have left no stone unturned to sell this point which has led to members of a particular community coming out and staging protests. In the past 7 days as many as 23 people have been killed in the protests and violence in different states.
The Prime Minister has made it clear that new citizenship law has got nothing to do with the Indian Muslims and there is no proposal to bring NRC across the country. He has given a clear message and one hopes that this will clear the misconceptions which have triggered a row across the country.
Soon after Prime Minister Modi delivered his speech in New Delhi, his critics started picking up holes and referred to the statements of other BJP ministers on the NRC. They forgot that Prime Minister is an authority and his clarification over the NRC has settled the issue. PM Modi has made the GoI's stand clear. After this no room has been left about holding a discussion over the NRC. People need to understand that there is no point in protesting against the issue which the GoI is not even considering. It is high time for them to call off the protests and get back to work.
