Threat of becoming irrelevant pushes NC, PDP to brink

EARLY TIMES REPORT

JAMMU, Dec 24: Kashmir-centric parties-National Conference (NC) and People's Democratic Party (PDP) are making desperate attempts to regroup and return to the political scene of Jammu & Kashmir.
Both these parties held the meetings of their leaders in Srinagar on Monday for the first time since August 5, when centre announced its decision to reorganize the erstwhile state of Jammu & Kashmir and bifurcated it into two Union Territories.
The crux of both these meetings, according to analysts, was to seek the release of their leaders. They had no other agenda. "NC and PDP leaders had met to send a message to their detained bosses-Farooq Abdullah, Omar Abdullah and Mehbooba Mufti that they are worried about them and won't join any political process in their absence," the analyst told Early Times.
He said, "Since the day J&K has been reorganized the Kashmir-centric leaders have been cut to size. Prior to August 5 they used to question J&K's accession with the Union of India and used to claim that if centre tries to fiddle with J&K's status it would lead to a catastrophe."
The analyst said the developments which have taken place in the recent months have proved it that they were paper tigers and nothing more. "NC and PDP leaders who met after a long time in Srinagar did not even make a mention of J&K's accession or centre reorganizing the erstwhile state. They didn't even demand restoration of J&K statehood. Their meetings were just a formality to drive home a point that NC and PDP are alive and people should not write them off," he added.
An observer said, "Leaders of both the traditional parties are in a fix as they are aware about the fact that new parties and faces are coming to fore and this will change the political scene of Jammu & Kashmir completely. On the other hand they are unable to put their act together due to their lies and rhetoric getting exposed."
He said, "NC and PDP leaders know it very well that the revival of their parties under given circumstances looks impossible. Chances of any of these parties anytime returning to power look bleak as after delimitation Jammu would be empowered due to the number of Assembly seats being increased."
The observer said, "Holding meetings and making their presence felt won't help the cause of NC and PDP. These parties stand at crossroads and no one can help them as politics of deceit has got no takers."
