Forget Jammu, New Delhi to host ‘Kashmir’ centric festival
12/25/2019 12:37:22 AM
Early Times Report

Jammu, Dec 24: Amid no let up in apparent pampering of valley even after the abrogation of the special status of the erstwhile state, in the latest the national capital is set to host a festival to showcase the crafts, cuisine and culture of the recently created Union Territory with no mention of Jammu but only Kashmir in the name of festival.
Sources said the six day festival, named after Kashmir and “first of its kind” since the abrogation of Article 370, will be held at the Indira Gandhi National Center for the Arts in New Delhi this month.
Sources said most of the prominent performers for the event will be from one particular region or belong to one particular community with “Jammu being ignored.” “The idea of Jammu and Kashmir is being showcased to be idea of Kashmir alone, and this is something which hurts the sentiments of the Dogra community, which feels neglected as always for seventy years now,” said some observers.
The people of Jammu have reservations over holding of such an event as the mention of Jammu is missing in the very title of the festival. The Jammu people blamed the government for its alleged discrimination with the winter capital region.
“If it was supposed to be the first such event to be held after the abrogation of the special state, Jammu should have also been mentioned in the title… It is supposed to be the same old story of discrimination with the Dogra legacy,” said a prominent Jammuite, working at Jammu University.
He said over the years the “dominant narrative of Kashmir has overshadowed the interests of Jammu.”
“The idea is being given that Jammu is not supposed to be the priority though it is this region which has always upheld the nationalist sentiment and continues to face Pakistani aggression and other terror,” he added.
Officials said it was the responsibility of the Tourism Department to have kept the interests of Jammu in mind and should have conveyed the same to the hosts such that no discrimination would have taken place.
Despite repeated attempts the organizers of the event couldn’t be contacted for comments.
