Gun-license scam returns
1/1/2020 10:28:39 PM
The fake gun-license scam has once again come into limelight with country's premiere investigating agency, Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) conducting raids on the residences of several former District Magistrates posted in the erstwhile State of Jammu and Kashmir.
The raids, which were carried out earlier this week, were the first major operation by the CBI after the J&K Government handed over the case to the agency in August this year. The gun license scam had hogged the headlines in 2018 when it came to fore that gun licenses issued in the erstwhile State of Jammu and Kashmir were fuelling weapon trade across the country. According to the official figures nearly two lakh gun licenses were issued in Jammu and Kashmir in two years of which 80 percent turned out to be fake. As the CBI has intensified the probe into the racket there is every possibility about more skeletons tumbling out of the cupboard. The erstwhile political regime was well aware about this scam and even the probes were conducted by it but these investigations were not taken to conclusion as the people involved in the alleged racket were influential and very close to "powerful" people.
The question which is haunting everyone is how come such an important issue was ignored by the people who ruled J&K in the past, despite them being aware about J&K being a conflict ridden place. The Jammu and Kashmir, according to the preliminary investigations carried out by the investigating agencies of the erstwhile State, had become the epicenter of fake gun licenses which were circulated across the country. On July 12, 2018, the then Jammu and Kashmir Government had revoked individual gun licenses issued from January 2017 to February 2018, citing irregularities. Even some low rung officials were arrested in connection with the case but the pace of the investigations was slow. With the transition of the erstwhile State of J&K into a Union Territory there is every possibility about investigations being expedited in the fake gun license scam.
After the application of J&K Reorganization Act 2019 the CBI's jurisdiction stands extended to the newly carved out UT of J&K and it can operate freely without seeking any nod from the administration. In absence of a political dispensation the people involved in this scam have been left with a very few options as the politicians cannot help anyone at this point of time. Breakthrough looks imminent as the investigations have picked up pace.
