Kashmir to get 2 more drug de-addiction centers, Jammu only 1
1/9/2020 11:49:32 PM

Early Times Report

Jammu, Jan 9: In yet another case of apparent discrimination with the Jammu region, the government is coming up with two more drug de-addiction centers in the Kashmir province, whereas mere one such facility is being established in the winter capital region.
Official sources told Early Times that from January 2020, the Union Territory would have three more drug de-addiction centers with Kashmir getting major share of such facilities when the UT has over 3.5 lakh cases of drug addiction. Official sources said Jammu has more than one lakh such cases.
Officials said the new facility would be made available by the Health and Medical Education Department in the Medical Colleges of Anantnag and Baramulla in the south and north of Kashmir, respectively. In Jammu, however, only one such facility will be available and that too in Kathua.
It is pertinent to mention that Kashmir already houses a full-fledged drug de-addiction center that is run by the Jammu and Kashmir Police in Srinagar.
Seen among the best such facilities across the country, the drug de-addiction center, run by the police has already benefitted the valley in fighting the drug abuse.
Since the end of Dogra regime in 1947, the winter capital region has long been seen as the victim of discrimination, which was allegedly fuelled by the Kashmir based political parties who ruled the erstwhile state for the past over seven decades.
The discrimination was expected to end after the abrogation of the special status, but till now any such respite is awaited.
Infact since the abrogation of the special status, despite observing shutdown in line with the separatist sentiment, Kashmir has been getting “additional benefits like market intervention schemes and special funds for development activities.”
When contacted a senior official in the Health and Medical Education Department confirmed that three new drug de-addiction centers were being opened with two in Kashmir.
