Mehbooba, a leader without party; PDP decimated
1/9/2020 11:50:47 PM

EARLY TIMES REPORT

JAMMU, Jan 9: A group of Kashmir centric leaders comprising mostly of the rebels from Peoples Democratic Party calling on the Lieutenant Governor G C Murmu in Jammu has broken the ice and it’s an indication that the PDP led by the former chief minister Mehbooba Mufti stands decimated.
An analyst while talking to Early Times said, “The PDP had started breaking soon after the death of former Chief Minister Mufti Mohammad Sayeed as his daughter Mehbooba Mufti lacked the skills to keep her flock together.”
He said, “Soon after Mehbooba Mufti became the first woman Chief Minister of the erstwhile State of Jammu and Kashmir in 2016 the first thing she did was she sidelined the people who were close to her father and had stood by him in the testing times.”
The analyst said, “Instead of giving a chance to the elected leaders of her party she promoted her own kith and kin and sidelined the leaders, who had worked hard to build the party. The PDP during Mehbooba’s tenure turned more into a party which was run by the family members of the former Chief Minister.”
He said the group which met the LG in Jammu recently comprised of the leaders, who long back had raised the banner of revolt against Mehbooba. “After her father’s death in 2016, Mehbooba refused to form the government for nearly more than two months. Her indecisiveness led to a faction within her party holding negotiations with the BJP on its own and many people believe that had Mehbooba not decided to don her father’s mantle at that point of a time entirely a new set of leaders would have come into power then,” the analyst added.
An observer said that BJP pulling out from the Mehbooba led government in June 2018 proved to be the last nail in PDP’s coffin and since then party has been in doldrums. “Mehbooba had made a last ditch attempt to save her party in the end of 2018 by joining hands with NC and Congress and staking a claim to form the government but it proved to be a futile exercise,” he added.
“Mehbooba Mufti, who has been under detention since August 5, 2019, has lost the plot in Jammu and Kashmir as she has emerged as a leader without a party. She has no one to fall back upon not even the family members, including her brother Tasaduq Mufti, whom she called from Mumbai, and handed him the Tourism portfolio. And not even the separatists, whom she supported outrightly,” the observer said.
