Early Times Report

JAMMU, Feb 2: The farmers of Jammu region feel neglected due to indifferent attitude of the Government which has failed to cover the farmers under insurance scheme as is prevalent in other parts of country.
According to sources farmers are up in arms against the Government which is totally unconcerned towards their plight.
Sources said the farmers resentment has grown especially in Jammu belt after their Kharif crop was totally damaged by unseasonal rains and hail storm in November and December months last year.
Sources said due to unseasonal rains and hailstorm the sowing of Rabi crop has also delayed due to which the farmers hopes of harvesting a good Rabi crop has also been lost. Sources said the areas where the seed for Rabi crop has been sown was also damaged and resowing has been considered a bad omen by farmers. Hence they lost all chances of harvesting good Rabi crop.
Sources said as per Agriculture Department survey 50 to 70 percent basmati crop has been damaged in Jammu region with the result farmers suffered a heavy loss.
The Agriculture Department has issued advisory for farmers regarding growing of alternate Rabi crop, sources added.
Sources said the farmers are totally perturbed over the failure of Government in taking care of farmers plight.
Though the Government sanctioned RS 670 per Kanal of land as compensation for loss but the farmers bodies have termed it totally less and cheating with farmers. They demanded RS 2000 compensation per Kanal of land as compensation.
Sources said failure of Government to implement crop insurance scheme in Jammu region on pattern of rest of country has also been a cause of concern for farmers who alleged that same has not been deliberately implemented by the Government.
Farmers have also demanded action against those officers responsible for non implementation of PM's FasalBhimaYojna in J&K.
