EARLY TIMES REPORT

SRINAGAR, Feb 2: Over the years illegal construction has been a serious concern but from past few months since the Article 370 was abrogated from the erstwhile state of Jammu and Kashmir, the builders have taken a full advantage and erected tall buildings in and around the green belts of Srinagar, the summer capital of JK union territory.
Reliable sources informed Early Times that, in violation of norms dozens of structures have come up in the green belt areas of Kashmir and it seems that nobody paid a heed towards the wrong doings, with the result ‘favoritism is ruling the roost’.
“After the abrogation of Article 370, there has been an enormous increase in the illegal constructions of buildings be it the residential colonies or shopping complexes or whatsoever, in the green belt areas including the vicinity of Nishat, Shalimar, Harwan, Dalgate and interiors of the city, and with the result these areas have been significantly shrunken, said sources.
If sources are to be believed they said that from past few months the influential people have taken undue advantage of the communication blockade and dissolution of administration in Jammu and Kashmir. Fact of the matter is that, the High Court and Government of Jammu and Kashmir have many times given clear cut directions to the concerned departments for demolition of those structures that have been illegally constructed, said sources.
Sources alleged that, the illegal construction of structures is a threat to biodiversity like various species of flora and fauna, including migratory birds.
One can imagine that the orders have remained confined on papers and they are for the poor masses that don’t have an access towards any political party, politicians or even bureaucrats, sources observed.
Sources further said that, in the past GoI allocated huge sum of money worth crores to maintain the sanctity of Dal Lake and other water bodies, but unfortunately that money was not properly utilized.
One can see that the famous Dal Lake has shrunk to few feet now and the department concerned is in shambles as they have failed to utilize the amount in a proper way, if the results would have been good then one may not have been witnessing today the illegal structures that have come up over the banks of Dal Lake.
However it was the core responsibility of the Lakes and Waterways Development Authority (LAWDA) to put their men and machinery into action, but no they have failed in doing so, sources added.
Sources also informed that many times in past people of these areas have show resentment against the departments, but no action whatsoever was taken against them and influential people hardly bothers about the threats and notices that were issued to them with regard to demolishing of structures from time to time.
