Early Times Report

JAMMU, Feb 2: It may sound weird but true that the Jammu and Kashmir Union Territory has not procured Critical Care Air Ambulance till date even as there are a large number of patients, who remain in dire need of it as and when they had to be shifted outside the UT.
In absence of such a vital component of critical care, the patients having serious health problems often die untimely thanks to the concerned department for showing least interest in the procurement of the Air Ambulances.
Keeping in view of the geographical condition of Jammu and Kashmir as well as highest number of accidental deaths, official sources told that the then Union Ministry of Health and Family Welfare had approved the proposal for procurement of two Critical Care Air Ambulances for Jammu and Kashmir.
Official sources further told that the then (erstwhile) State Government had made the proposal a part of the Emergency Management Response System (EMRS) for critically ill patients needing intervention at Tertiary Care or Super Speciality Hospitals.
Official sources added that when the project was taken up, the experts discussed and believed that Jammu and Kashmir has the problem of accessibility, poor road connectivity, the limited presence of the private sector and others and it makes more important to have such a service here.
“There are number of districts which have bad road connectivity and remain cut off from rest of the country for months due to landslides or heavy snowfall. As a result a number of people have died because they could not reach hospital during golden hours,” sources added.
In the absence of Air Ambulances cost lives of poor patients. Many lives could be saved if the air ambulances are available for patients as many patients brought to the hospitals die due to the time taken for them to be shifted from remote sites mainly after road traffic accidents to the hospital.
