Early Times Report

Jammu, Feb 5: In order to ensure transparency in the functioning of the official machinery, the Jammu and Kashmir government is all set to give nod to the vital project of CCTV installation inside the premises of the government offices with larger public dealings.
Reports informed that the high level meeting convened, earlier, in this regard has discussed at threadbare the modalities involved in the installation of the CCTV cameras in the government offices. There are high chances that during the first phase of such a novel initiative, cameras will be installed at the offices which have direct public dealing.
Sources within the dispensation divulged that in a bid to ensure transparency and accountability in the government functions, CCTV cameras will play a major role in teh entire process and that such a proposal would also compel those who are involved in corruption to remain on the tenterhooks.
A senior official told Early Times that though such an initiative should have been taken a long ago but the successive regimes in the erstwhile state remain non- serious due to which the project got shelved. “Recently, the issue was again discussed during some high level official meetings. It was unanimously resolved that installation of CCTV cameras in government offices would ensure a change in air besides playing an important role in keeping a check on the overall functioning of the departments,” official said.
It was also informed that the projects gets the green signal, then the monitoring would be done in the DC offices wherein special team during the office hours would be deployed.
Pertinently, the government so far has failed to monitors how public servants discharge their duties and spend their official time. The installation of the CCTVs in government offices and with recorded footage can have the enough evidence if any official is involved into the corrupt practises.
Officials divulged that such a measure would be brought under the ambit of RTI so that any person of the erstwhile state can seek the information and the footage of any particular day, he/ she deems necessary. “It has also be discussed that the footage captured by the CCTV cameras can be preserved so that if any person seeks it under the RTI, same could be provided.”
Sources within the government said such a measure would be hailed not only by the civil society of the erstwhile state but only would provide a sigh of relief for the general masses who continue to pitch for the eradication of the corrupt practises from Jammu and Kashmir.
If such a proposal is implemented on ground, it will put lid over the high handedness of the government officials who continue to take masses for a ride that too sans any check. Fudging the duty hours too would be an impossible attempt then.
