MGNREGA scam in Kalakote, Moghla makes mockery of historic act

Early Times Report

RAJOURI, Feb 6: A massive scam has come to fore in the implementation of the much-publicized Mahatma Gandhi National Rural Employment Guarantee Act (MGNREGA) in various villages of blocks Moghla and Kalakote in District Rajouri, giving a grim insight into the shady world where officials carry out murky deals to fill their own coffers at the expense of tax-payers money.
There is a huge bungling of funds worth lakhs in block Moghla of District Rajouri under centrally sponsored scheme MGNREGA sources told Early Times.
A local Wazir Mohammad said that MGNREGA scheme was designed to provide job guarantee for at least 100 days in rural areas, so that every poor family could get benefits.
He said that it is all vice-versa in Kalakote Tehsil since the work is allotted to all blue eyed persons of Rural Development Department.
The Sarpanchs and other political activists have got lion's share for which huge amount was taken in the form of bills, whereas fact of the matter is that poor and needy people were ignored on all fronts, sources said.
Despite issuing job cards to the poor people no work was allotted to them as the work was sanctioned to some influential people, including AEEs/ JEs/ VLWs who happened to be the close relatives of some employees of the department concerned, said Junaid Ahmed.
He alleged that from past five years work leading to 20 lakhs was illegally sanctioned to some political activists including Sarpanchs, Panchs and other influential people, adding the already work done was repeated continuously to drawn fake bills on fictitious works.
We approached BDO many times in recent past to apprise him of illegal works adding that we requested him to take on spot verification of works, but he turned a deaf ear to our pleas, the locals said.
When contacted, ACD Rajouri Susheel Khajuria assured for an enquiry and took the matter as the point of grave concern.
