Vinod Chandrashekhar Dixit2/6/2020 11:09:41 PM
We all know that zoos are of great importance as they protect and preserve a number of endangered species of animals and birds. For example, the white tiger in India in depleting fast. There may be a very few of them alive as most of them have become a victim to illegal poaching. Kankaria Zoo in Ahmedabad is India's first nocturnal zoo. The two-floor zoo is designed to create a night-like environment in the day time and vice versa. It was built in 2017, keeping nocturnal animals such as Hedgehog, Jungle cat, and Striped Hyena, who are active in dark under the supervision of its Director Dr. R. K. Sahu. Nocturnal animals includes small cats, Tody cats, Bats, Procupines, Leapard, Jackal, Wolf, Hyene and other nocturnal animals.
It is designed in a a way as to give it a jungle-like texture also According to Dr Sahu total investment on this zoo was Rs 17 crore and today the Zoo's income is more than Rs 4 Cr. Per year.
While these animals usually sleep during the day and stay awake at night, the house manipulates light to ensure that nocturnal animals stay awake during day and sleep at night. The visitors were not able to see such animals sleeping during visiting hours at the Kankaria zoo but now as the nocturnal house has been built the visitors are be able to view the animals moving around. The need to observe certain animal species (nocturnal animals) during night hours led the zoo to acquire land of about 6 acres from across the existing zoo at the one tree hill garden compound.
Zoo Director Dr. R K Sahu says, "Nocturnal animals like leopard, night jackals and hyenas will live in this section. It has been created in a way that animals will get a night-time environment during the day and vice-versa. So visitors will be able to watch them move around during day time." It has got a geothermal system for aeration, introduced first time in India for animals as well as visitors. It is also provided with a special lighting system to give it a night-like look.
