Srinagar to get 150 more fountains this summer as Jammu craves for water
2/14/2020 11:27:37 PM
Early Times Report

Jammu, Feb 14: Come summers and the summer capital of Srinagar is likely to have over 148 more fountains across various roads in the city whereas no such plan seems to be in place for Jammu, the city that craves for water during the scorching heat.
In yet another initiative that is aimed at modernization of Srinagar, the Srinagar Municipal Corporation is planning to construct the foundations in all the 74 wards with each ward getting at least two such fountains as a part of the multi-crore project.
The beautification is expected to cost over Rs 10 crore. Sources said each of wards has been granted Rs 45 lakh of budget for such developmental works.
The SMC has taken this lead after being ranked first among the cleanest towns and cities in Jammu and Kashmir. The Jammu city, on the other hand, continues to be the tale of apparent discrimination and neglect. A few months ago, Srinagar was ranked first among 78 urban local bodies in Jammu and Kashmir in Swatch Survekshan League SSL 2020.
In the pan-India cleanliness survey conducted under the banner of SSL 2020, Srinagar had also shown an improvement in level of cleanliness jumping to rank 45 from 448 position of 2018.
But the survey conducted by the Union Ministry of Housing and Urban Affairs under the aegis of Swatch Bharat Mission, couldn’t bring such accolades for Jammu as the Jammu Municipal Corporation apparently failed to “safeguard the interests of the City of Temples.”
While the JMC is headed by a Mayor from the Bharatiya Janta Party, the experts equally blame the Housing and Development Department for having failed to take measures so that Jammu could be given its due share in the long ending upgradation of infrastructure including beautification.
Eyebrows are also being raised over the performance of the corporators at the civic body. “It is supposed to be responsibility of the BJP to ensure all-round development of Jammu city, but till now the results are pathetic,” said Dineshwar Kumar, a Jammuite.
When contacted a senior official said the matter would be looked into.
