Srinagar colleges give damn to uniform for students
Security experts raise concerns
2/28/2020 11:50:33 PM
Early Times Report

Srinagar, Feb 28: Even as the colleges in Kashmir province have been working for the past around a fortnight, the students of Cluster University of Srinagar are not adhering to dress code with security agencies raising concerns over such “sheer indiscipline.”
While the Cluster University of Srinagar often remains in news for allegedly wrong reasons, in the latest the CUS has been unable to make the affiliated colleges adhere to discipline for students.
The students of affiliated colleges like Amar Singh College and Sri Pratap College in particular don’t attend their college in proper college uniform.
Speaking on the condition of anonymity, a senior official in the police department told the Early Times that students attending colleges without proper uniforms pose a “threat to security grid on the whole.”
He said uniform is the first thing which distinguishes a student from others and “thus in a place like Kashmir where anti-national forces have been desperate to create a scene, the students should have been visibly recognizable.”
Explaining his point further, the official said, “In case of any untoward incident, it’s easy to identify a student and take care of his protection but when the students are not distinguishable things become difficult.”
Raising a point from “security point of view”, he said, “What if some miscreants mix up with college students and try to provoke them for protests?”
It is pertinent to mention that since the abrogation of the special status of Jammu and Kashmir on August 5, 2019 the police have been working hard to maintain peace in the valley.
During the Peoples Democratic Party-Bharatiya Janta Party regime, the government had to face tough time due to protests by students and keeping the student community away from protests has been among the priorities for the government since.
As per observers, while wearing school and college uniforms prevents mixing up of miscreants with the those pursuing educations, it also maintains discipline.
“Students wearing proper uniform is among the first signs of discipline for any educational institution, but if the students don’t wear the same, it speaks about the maladministration on the part of the college or varsity authorities to say the least,” said a senior official.
When contacted a senior official in the CUS said the matter was being looked into and that the students have been asked to come to colleges in “proper uniform.”
