Early Times Report

Jammu, Mar 1: The residents of Azad Nagar Upper Gandigarh today staged protest against the construction of bund wall only on one side of Nallah and accused the Flood Control Department of ignoring the local residents who live in flood prone area.
They accused the department of giving sanction for the construction of Nallah bund wall, which is being constructed at the approximately cost of Rs 15 lakhs without knowing the ground reality of the area.
The residents alleged that department had allotted work without applying mind only to favour a local leader. “During rains, there is flood like situation due absence of bund wall on the both side of Nallah, which enter into the most of houses nearby it and to get rid of this there was dire need of construction of bund wall on both side of the nallah to protect the people from flood water. We have to face huge difficulty whenever there is flood water and the problem remains even many days after flood is over,” the local residents alleged.
They further said that personal discrimination has been done to the people living other side of the nallah. The bund wall is being constructed only for the protection a particular potion of the area, and to protect their land, which belong to some influential people but in all this, the poor residents are being ignored.
Senior officials of the Flood Control Department were also present on the occasion when work started, who didn’t listen to the people. They alleged that due to frequent flood in nallah, a part of bridge constructed over it was also washed away and it could not be repaired by the concerned department. Moreover, the overflowing of nallah causes huge problem for people, which emanate foul smell and give birth to diseases.
The locals demanded the Lieutenant Governor to take note of issue and urged him to direct the concerned department of taking immediate corrective measures in favour the majority residents.
