Don’t deprive people of basic facilities, Munish urges administration
New Dashmesh Nagar in Digiana area neglected, lakh civic amenities

EARLY TIMES REPORT

JAMMU, Mar 1: Editor, Early Times, Munish Gupta, on Sunday urged the administration not to deprive people of basic amenities like road, water, electricity, sanitation and proper drainage system in various areas under Municipal limits so as to ensure that Jammu is developed as a ‘Smart City’ in real sense.
Munish, who would be contesting the forthcoming Assembly elections from Gandhi Nagar constituency said, “It is bounden duty of the government to provide necessary rudimentary facilities to the people but unfortunately the successive regimes have failed to do so thus far as localities like New Dashmesh Nagar in Digiana area still crave for basic amenities even as the colony came into being about two decades ago. I urge the administration to do the needful at the earliest so that people heave a sigh of relief.”
He said that the residents of New Dashmesh Nagar have been deprived of elementary facilities including tiled lanes, better sanitation and suitable drainage system adding that at least something needs to be done to provide them with basic amenities, which they don't have till now.
Meanwhile, a group of residents of New Dashmesh Nagar while speaking to Early Times said that though they are living in Municipal limits but unplanned development, poor sanitation and improper sewage besides bumpy lanes and improper drainage system give them a feeling as if they are residing in a village.
Devoid of basic amenities, locals of New Dashmesh Nagar alleged that despite being developed as a residential colony about 20 years back, the lanes and by-lanes are still in dilapidated condition as the streets in the entire area have still not been macadamized.
“We made repeated appeals to the local Councilor as well as the district administration; however, the authorities have failed to lay tiles or blacktopped the lanes and by-lanes of the colony so far. Commuting on such bumpy and rough lanes gives hard times not only to travellers but also to pedestrians,” said Gurmeet Singh, President of New Dashmesh Nagar Mohalla Association.
While Arjun Mahajan, General Secretary, New Dashmesh Nagar Mohalla Association demanded that the locality should be well equipped with street lights as the safety of the inhabitants remain at risk in absence of proper lighting in the lanes.
“There is no provision of street lights in our locality as most of the lanes are without them. We carry a torch to move out during late evening hours. It seems we are living in a dark age as there is no light in streets. Talking about cleanliness, no Safaikaramchari or Municipal vehicle comes here to pick waste. Moreover, the entire colony has not been provided with the dustbins. We are facing problems due to poor sanitation and sewerage system,” said Mahajan.
Several other residents of the area including Jasbir Singh, Jaspreet Singh, Manmeet Singh, Bachan Lal Choudhary, Govinder Kumar, Sonia, Shaheen, Kuldeep Singh, Jasbir Singh and Ishpal Singh highlighted the problem of poor drainage system in their colony while they also rued the unhygienic conditions in which the inhabitants are living.
“Drains in the area had not been upgraded even as a large number of homes were built over the years. The drains in most of the area are choked due to which the filthy water gets overflowed all around and even enters into houses,” they said.
“The lanes and drains are in shambles. Drains are not cleared on regular basis while they are also not covered with iron mesh or concrete slabs due to which the children while playing in streets often fell into them,” they added.
The locals said that nobody comes to listen to their grievances adding that the political class show their faces only when elections are round the corner and afterwards they never turn up to listen to their woes or try to address the issues confronting them.
“The residents of the locality are grappling with a large number of civic issues but there is no respite despite their constant efforts to overcome them. Most of the previously elected legislators are to be blamed for our plight as they seldom paid attention to our problems during their respective tenures,” said locals.
The residents also pointed towards heaps of garbage and filth in few vacant plots. They said that that dumping of waste in open is nothing but a breeding ground for fleas and mosquitoes that expose people to several communicable diseases.
