Trade and terror can’t go together
3/1/2020 10:59:19 PM
Recent report submitted by the Ministry of Home Affairs has stated that the cross LoC trade which was stopped on August 19, 2019 will remain suspended. The MHA has not given any timeline for it being resumed again.
The cross LoC trade which commenced in 2008 between divided parts of Jammu and Kashmir was considered as one of the biggest confidence building measures between India and Pakistan. It survived for eleven years but during that period every attempt was made from the other side to smuggle narcotics, weapons, fake currency and other items into Jammu and Kashmir.
On many occasions law enforcing agencies recovered arms and drugs which were being sent into this side. Besides it came to fore that the money was used for funneling terrorist activities in Jammu and Kashmir.
The MHA had put forward a proposal to suspend the cross LoC trade in 2017 itself but the then J&K Chief Minister, Mehbooba Mufti, opposed the move and didn’t allow the proposal to get through. Her move encouraged the elements inimical to peace sitting on the other side of the Line of Control to carry on with their nefarious designs and activities. A few elements proved detrimental for the genuine traders, who really wanted to do business and earn through fair means.
Now, the MHA has said that the cross LoC trade will remain suspended till the strict regime is put in place to ensure that only bonafide trade takes place for the benefit of people. But for that Pakistan will have to mend its ways. It will first have to take action against the terrorists operating from their soil. Secondly it will have to dismantle the terror infrastructure.
Till now whosoever has come into power in Pakistan has danced to the tunes of Army and its spy agency ISI. None of the rulers in Pakistan have made an attempt to improve the relations with India. They have been following the policy of vendetta and destruction. Change in India’s foreign policy and its bullet for bullet approach has rattled the neighbouring country to some extent but still there are many elements in Pakistan who talk about spreading terror and violence in India. They can’t think beyond it.
The slew of measures which the Government of India has taken in the past is a clear indication that terrorists and their supporters won’t be tolerated and if the need arises Indian troops can cross the LoC to hit the terrorists hard. Now its for Pakistan to decide what it wants trade or war?
