The Jammu and Kashmir Government deciding to lift ban over the use of social media after a period of seven months surprised almost everyone across the newly carved out Union Territory of J&K.
The social media was blocked in Jammu and Kashmir on August 5, 2019, when the Government of India announced its decision to abrogate the special status of the erstwhile State and bifurcated it into two union territories.
The developments which have taken place during the past few years in J&K, especially in Kashmir, have proved it beyond doubt that people sitting across the Line of Control misused social media for radicalizing the youth and carrying out a vicious propaganda.
Although 4G services have not been restored and people will have to remain content with the low speed internet still it’s a big relief. The social media during all these years has become an integral part of the lives of people. Besides exchanging views, social media sites have become effective marketing tools and business platforms. If all goes well lifting of ban on the social media could go in a long way in restoring the broken links.
The biggest challenge for the security agencies in days to come will be to keep a check on the content which Pakistan may try to export through the social media. For the past seven months the neighbouring country has been trying its best to establish contact with its agents in Kashmir but due to social media being blocked the terror bosses and the hate mongers couldn’t succeed in their nefarious designs.
Since August 5, 2019 situation in J&K has changed drastically. Kashmir has remained calm, and the people seem to have realized that resorting to stone pelting and violence are not going to help their cause. The instigators have been shown their right place and the crackdown launched by the NIA on the funding channels of the Pakistan stooges have turned almost all the orchestrators defunct.
People who used to misuse social media in Kashmir at the pretext of freedom of speech and expression have understood clearly during the past seven months that sedition is no freedom of speech and whosoever makes an attempt to challenge the writ of the State will have to face the music. The government has thrown open all the channels, now it’s for people to ensure that they safeguards their rights and perform their duties.
