SRINAGAR, Mar 5: Following the scare caused by outbreak of Corona Virus in different parts of globe including India tremendous stress is being laid on the health and hygiene especially sanitation in the government hospitals in the union territory of Jammu & Kashmir.
However, the scene on the ground is dismal and the administration of different hospitals in the union territory has to pull up their socks in improving the overall scenario on the sanitation front. The failure of the people at helm leads to infection in many cases with patients being the ultimate sufferers.
Sources told Early Times that in most of the cases the administration in government hospitals depends on the superficial cleaning and does not undertake the process in a scientific manner. They said sanitation in government hospitals is limited to the cleaning of floor and carrying out mopping operation.
“In most of the cases the sanitation staff members attach a big cloth with the big and wide log of wood and clean the floors of government hospitals in Jammu & Kashmir. Wipers that are used to clean the floors in the houses, private hospitals and offices are absent in the government sector especially in the hospitals,” said sources.
Sources said that disinfectants that are used in the cleaning process in the private sector are not used in the government sector adding that administration of government hospitals continue believing that using the phenyl would clean the floor of all the harmful germs. They said the people should get awakened so that necessary steps are taken in this regard.
“In the private hospitals stress is laid on the hygiene aspect of managing the patients but there is no such thing in the government sector. In the government hospitals the sanitation is limited to cleaning the floor twice a day. No concern is shown to the cleaning of walls and other things such as fans, radiators and the different medical equipments,” said sources.
Sources said that the bedding of the government hospitals is too dirty and the respective administrations do not take necessary measures in this regard. They said that although huge funds are allocated for this purpose but on the ground bed sheets, covers, pillows and quilts are seldom changed in the government hospitals.
“How can you expect the people admitted in different government hospitals to get better when the basic things are not in order? Over the years the successive governments of the erstwhile state of Jammu & Kashmir have paid little attention to the health and hygiene in the government hospitals,” said sources.
Sources said that it is due to this reason that people tend to go to private hospitals rather than government hospitals for treatment. At the same time they say that the bathrooms of the government hospitals are in a bad condition with foul smell coming out of the same pushing the patients and the attendants to the wall.
