Pvt hostels in Srinagar ‘illegally’ consume electricity worth millions, PDD in slumber
Locals seek Murmu’s intervention
3/7/2020 12:23:33 AM

EARLY TIMES REPORT

Srinagar, Mar 6: Dozens of private hostels for students from far flung areas running in Srinagar have been getting power supply allegedly illegally as such business establishments in brazen violation of the prescribed norms consume the power on domestic agreement.
Official sources said some of the PDD officials allegedly in league with the private hostel operators have been silent over the misuse of domestic power by such businessmen.
A senior official in the PDD said that as per the norms, the private hostel operators had to opt for agreement of commercial connection with the concerned department and also install a separate transformer. “Not only getting commercial connection of power, the said parties had to install transformers of their own so that load of such power consumption doesn’t fall on the domestic consumers of the locality,” said the official on the condition of anonymity.
But the PDD is understood to have allegedly been silent on the issue for reasons best known to the higher ups even as dozens of students who come from rural areas live in such hostels. Sources said given the big number of such hostels running in various residential localities of Srinagar, the PDD is suffering loss worth millions of rupees monthly by not making such business players accountable to pay commercial fee properly.
Official sources said it is pertinent to mention that such hostels are operating from almost all the residential colonies of Srinagar in areas like Rajbagh, Hazratibal, Nowgam, Bemina, Paripora and Jawahar Nagar.
The residents of the said areas have already been complaining that the voltage in such localities has been affected. “Due to undue load of power of these hostels, we are under darkness for no fault of ours,” said some residents.
When contacted senior official in the PDD refuted that there was negligence on the part of their department. “We are looking into such complaints and our department has been active,” the official said.
Meanwhile the complainants in a written application have appealed Lieutenant Governor LG Murmu to “look into the matter and get inspections done on this front to prevent the government exchequer from further and undue loss due to misuse of power.”
