Early Times Report

Anantnag, Mar 18: Pathetic conduction of health care services in Kashmir can be gauged from the fact that the Government Medical College Anantnag has only two ventilators for COVID-19 patients.
According to Health Department Officials’ Government Medical College Anantnag has only six ventilators out of which two have been kept for corona virus patients.
However, they said that the college doesn’t have enough trained staff for operating these ventilators.
“A medical College is supposed to have more than twenty ventilators but here we have just six and out of six only two for combating coronavirus,” they said, adding the authorities have failed to enhance infrastructure and allied machinery in medical college despite having enough funds
They said that medical college authorities have also failed to regulate the influx of patients in OPD. “There is no separate screening center or screening clinic for screening people and people continue to visit the hospital in hordes,” they added.
A group of doctors while expressing concern said that the lone Maternity and Child Care Hospital Anantnag (M&CCH) is also functioning without ventilator from past over 20 years and the government despite being requested several times never bothered to provide this basic facility to the department.
“We have been provided limited quantity of masks and hand sanitizers,” staff members of Maternity Hospital told Early Times.
They said that hospital hasn’t setup any screening clinic and neither has regulated influx of patients. “The hospital is facing space shortage. It is not possible for us to ensure that patients maintain space because we don’t have space here,” they said.
The Maternity and Child Care hospital has only few nebulizers and often children suffering from different respiratory ailments like bronchioitis are advised to go for nebulization and compelled to use common nebulizers without changing its tubing and mask
They said that hospital even doesn’t have space for pregnant ladies and as such no isolation ward has been setup for COVID patients.
Officials’ also revealed that five sub-district hospitals functioning in the district are also without ventilators. “We have just six ventilators for a population of 1.6 Lakh,” they said.
Important to mention here, the Jammu and Kashmir Government has shut schools, banned mass gatherings and imposed Section 144 across the UT, however little has been done for providing better health care services to the people.
