Dynasts’ made Jammu pay fee as business establishments in Srinagar work without SMC registration
3/18/2020 11:17:52 PM
Early Times Report

Srinagar, Mar 18: In a shocking development it has been found that the previous regimes allowed most of the banks, and business institutions including hotels, restaurants and shops in Srinagar to run without registration from the Srinagar Municipal Corporation thereby meaning that such institutions have not being paying requisite fee towards the SMC while Jammu city has been paying crores of rupees on such lines.
Officials said over the years the SMC has been facing major loss to the tune of crores of rupees due to the non registration of such offices who were supposed to pay regular fee.
Official documents accessed by the Early Times reveal that the SMC has served notices to the concerned to get registered. “Through the medium of this notice, all banks are directed to get their branches registered with the Srinagar Municipal Corporation by the end of March 2020, otherwise their establishments will be deemed as illegal and shall be initiated against the offenders under section 384, 388(i) and 389 of the Municipal Corporation Act of 2000 without serving any notice,” the notice reads.
Official documents reveal that many of the business establishments in Kashmir have been working without registration. “It has been observed that various Business Establishments like Hotels, Restaurants, Cafes, provisional stores, cloth merchants, readymade garments, telecom outlets, medical shops, doctors clinics and diagnostic centers etc are running their business establishments within Municipal jurisdiction without having municipal registration,” reads a document duly signed by the Chief Revenue Officer SMC. Official sources said over the years, the “dynasts” who had ruled Jammu and Kashmir wanted business community in Kashmir to enjoy working without paying dues like the municipal fee, while no such “relaxations were given to Jammu ever”.
“This was done deliberately to benefit the Kashmiri businessmen otherwise how can any business unit be allowed to work without requisite registration,” said a senior official on the condition of anonymity.
Now the process to register all such establishments has been started under the dynamic leadership of Lieutenant Governor GC Murmu.
“We have asked all such defaulters to get their units registered or strict action will be initiated,” said a senior official in the Housing and Urban Development Department.
