National Conference president, Farooq Abdullah, after his release from 7-month detention has steered away from raising the issues which his party survived on since its inception.
There were reports that the Congress party had asked Farooq to attend the Parliament session so that the BJP led NDA government can be cornered over revocation of J&K’s special status. However, Farooq has not paid any heed towards the proposal moved by the Congress Party.
It seems the National Conference president has realized that talking about Article 370 and raising hollow slogans won’t help his party’s cause anymore. Situation across the Union Territory of Jammu and Kashmir has changed drastically post August 5. The Government of India (GoI) has dispelled all the notions vis-à-vis J&K. The GoI has sent a clear message that J&K’s status is non-negotiable and no one can challenge India’s sovereignty.
The day Farooq was released he described his freedom has incomplete and said that he won’t talk about the political issues till his son Omar Abdullah and PDP chief Mehbooba Mufti were released.
It seems Farooq has realized that he can no more afford to talk about the issues which the party thrived on during the past seven decades. If he opens his mouth and raises the issues which have been buried by the BJP led NDA government it could mean trouble for him and others. By maintaining silence he seems to have set the tone for the new era of politics in the Valley. He remaining quiet is a message for Omar, Mehbooba and others to forget the past and think about present and the future.
The lines in Kashmir have been drawn. It’s clear that anti-national rhetoric won’t be tolerated. Nor will anyone be allowed to advocate Pakistan’s cause and talk about Azadi. The separatists, who were patronized by some mainstream leaders, stand isolated and have been cut to the size. They won’t reemerge on the scene again.
The GoI has provided an opportunity to the traditional mainstream Kashmir centric politicians to mend their ways and fall in the line. Now, it’s for the leaders of these parties to decide how they want to shape up their politics and their careers. If they continue to beat around the bush they will end up in a soup. GoI’s policy is crystal clear that one who preaches separatism and talks about sedition will have to face the law of the land.
