Exposing lacunas in education system
4/28/2020 12:27:57 AM
A top bureaucrat exposing the muck in the Education Department has ruffled many feathers. The bureaucrat recently tweeted that some government officials posted in higher secondary schools have managed to overstay in Srinagar and Jammu cities as they enjoyed political patronage and are running tuition centers. He suggested these teachers should be shifted to break their nexus with land mafia and to give exposure to them to rural areas.
Issue of the government school teachers not being transferred for years together was highlighted on many occasions during the tenures of the erstwhile political regimes but the rulers just ignored it and allowed the influential teachers to call the shots.
After J&K’s reorganization, Right To Education, has come into force in the newly carved out union territory so, the government teachers cannot give the tuitions nor can they become a part of the private coaching institutes. Anyone who violates the rules is bound to face action.
Till the recent past the government had no powers to act against the erring teachers. Now the people at the helm have been empowered with the RTE and they are free to take stern action. Ones who used to run to their political masters to save them have been left with nowhere to go. They have no other option other than to fall in the line. Ones who don’t mend their ways can be shown the exit door.
J&K’s transition into a Union Territory from a State has exposed the lacunas in the old system, which remained prevalent for many years. Now, it seems that the time has come to undo the wrongs which were committed by the former rulers. Slowly things seem to be falling at place and it appears that system will be streamlined eventually.
Everyone is aware about the fact that lot needs to be done to put the derailed system back on track. The work has commenced on it and results will come soon. The Education Department has to be revamped to ensure that children from weaker sections of the society don’t remain deprived from their Right To Education. Initiatives which are being taken to popularize education and help the students are a welcome step but these have to be implemented in letter and spirit. These should not remain confined to papers only. One hopes that words get transformed into action and the children get their right to study and study well.
