Distancing - A spell to survive
5/17/2020 12:09:49 AM

Mahadeep Singh Jamwal

We have many illustrations, where timely and correct advice has saved human beings. The right instruction from the right person, at the right time is most crucial and beneficial. To achieve success, we also need right knowledge, support and guidance. For many people, who are taking the corona virus casually must remember the ‘Mahabharata’ where ‘Krishna’s advice and teaching saved and protected ‘Arjuna’ at every turn. Likewise When the entire globe is in powerful grip of the corona, our health experts and Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) officials assuming the role like that of ‘Krishna’ are suggesting, measures to limit a person’s risk of exposure or of spreading the virus and among them “social distancing” is life saving ‘Mantra’. Social distancing, or physical distancing, is a set of non-pharmaceutical interventions or measures taken to prevent the spread of a contagious disease. Social distancing measures date back to at least the fifth century BCE. The Bible contains one of the earliest known references to the practice in the Book of Leviticus. In modern times, social distancing measures have been successfully implemented in several previous epidemics. It is widely viewed as an effective behavior and something that anyone and everyone should practice. It is a behavioral practice to lower the risk in most circumstances. Things could always be better, if we maintain the sanctity of the lockdown and distancing ‘Mantra’ and everything will be okay in the end, but things could always be worse, if we disregard distancing. Experts and the experience of countries fighting the deadly virus make it clear that the social distancing is the only way to combat the disease. Social distancing means keeping a safe distance (approximately 6 feet) from others and avoiding gathering spaces such as schools, churches, concert halls and public transportation. Social distancing practices are changes in behavior that can help stop the spread of infections. These often include curtailing social contact, work and schooling among seemingly healthy individuals, with a view to delaying transmission and reducing the size of an outbreak. There is evidence from previous outbreaks, including the 1918 flu pandemic and the 2014 Ebola outbreak, as well as from outbreak simulations, that social distancing can effectively limit the spread of infections.
Around the world people asked to stay home and it has cut off from their regular routines. This may cause stress during this period and common sources of stress include a drop in meaningful activities, social engagement; financial strain from being unable to work; and a lack of access to typical coping strategies such as going to the gym or attending religious services etc. We can manage our stress, by methods such as: Limit news consumption to reliable sources. Stay virtually connected with others using phone calls, text messages, video chat and social media to access social support networks. Get enough sleep, eat well and exercise in your home.
The tiring efforts by the front row warriors to break the transmission are not being realized by us and still we are behaving irresponsibly. We have yet to come out from the ethical dilemma even after months together. Whereas our behavioral ethics is the priority intervention most required to be exhibited at this juncture. For the purpose we don’t require any mandatory orders from the government but just have to exhibit our responsibility and to bank upon on our inner conscious. The one voice emanating from world health organization and advisories from the governments all over the world, to break the chain of corona transmission, and globally expected from every citizen is to maintain social distancing. This is certainly unprecedented time. We want to be social, and yet the best, safest thing we can do is to stay home and keep our distance from friends, family, and fellow humans. The corona virus (Covid-19) situation is dire, but the ability to make light of awful situations is self distancing. Home is a shelter from storms—all sorts of storms, hence we must maintain the sanctity of lock down. How we are sensitive to this issue is a million dollar question? We have to exhibit sensibility in maintaining distance, only remedy to get out of the clutches of corona otherwise eventually; everyone will be quarantined to their houses with no support to watch. Government didn’t say stop worshiping God but we must stop registering our presence in the created houses of almighty on earth. We must exhibit more sincerity in believing in God and exercising our faith. What is asking for is not that everyone should stop human contact but should social distance them, because the virus spread easily in a group of people. But for some people, this time of isolation is especially tough but for some of us, social distancing is right up our alleys, we're using these weeks to take on quick and easy dinner recipes, revisiting chapters left over in the childhood. Spend your free time the way you like, not the way you think you're supposed to. Hard reality is that we are all on social media a lot more than usual these days to stay connected without friends and family. A happy life must be to a great extent a quiet life, for it is only in an atmosphere of quiet that true joy dares live.
Social distancing is important and so is taking care of our mental health. In the midst of a scary and uncertain time and in the interest of finding new ways to put off real adult tasks, let us put in considerable time and efforts to find ways to enjoy our self, while we continue to do our part to keep everyone around us safe. It is important for people to have a certain level of social distance for safe health. There is another corona effect on psyche of populace as more advisories trickle more people become fearful but it is time to realize that there is nothing in life is to be feared, it is only to be understood. Now is the time to understand more, so that we may fear less.
