Early Times Report

Udhampur, May 20: The closure of the dhabas and other eateries along the national highway since lockdown, in Udhampur district has been causing untold miseries to the drivers of trucks, who have been supplying essential commodities across all the districts of the Union Territory. Moreover the owners of Dhabas and eateries are also suffering economically as due to lockdown there is no economic activity, due to which they have been facing crisis like situation. “We are facing a shortage of food on the way because of the closure of the dhabas. We have to cook food at the side of the road to fill our belly. In case our vehicles develop a snag, we have to fix it ourselves. This wastes our time,” said a trucker.
Thousands of trucks carrying essential commodities, medicines, minerals and PDS items ply the NH44 connecting Jammu to Srinagar. On a normal day, hundreds of dhabas, small hotels and garage owners have been providing essential services to the truck operators and have been earning some amount to run their families but due to threat of Corona Virus the lock down extended upto 31st of May .
“The government should open at least a couple of dhabas and garages to help us,” the truckers added. The Dhaba owners said that they were facing huge financial crunch due to continuous lockdown. “As all other shops have been allowed to resume their activities, the dhabas and eateries should also be allowed to open in view of the demands of truckers as well as the needs of the owners of these shops”, the Dhaba owners said.
